Best prop firm for your strategy? 12 rules to compare before you pay

The best prop firm is the one whose drawdown, trading restrictions and payout terms fit your real strategy—not the one advertising the largest account.

There is no single best prop firm for every trader. The best fit is a firm whose loss-limit formula, permitted strategies, payout conditions and total cost match how you already trade. Compare the rulebook first; use the discount and headline account size only as tie-breakers.

Start with usable risk, not advertised account size

A $100,000 challenge with a $10,000 maximum loss does not give you $100,000 of practical risk capital. Your strategy must survive inside the loss buffer while reaching the profit target. Compare target-to-drawdown ratio, daily loss room and the way open equity is counted.

The ForexCake prop-firm comparison separates provider score from data confidence and records rule fields individually, so a famous brand with unclear terms does not receive automatic credit.

12 prop-firm rules to compare

1. Maximum drawdown type

Identify whether maximum drawdown is static, end-of-day trailing, intraday trailing or trailing only until a fixed level. The percentage alone is meaningless without the formula and reference point.

2. Daily loss calculation

Check whether daily loss includes floating P&L, commissions and swaps; whether it references starting balance, previous close or equity; and the exact reset time and timezone. A position held across reset can behave differently from what a calendar-day assumption suggests.

For an example of why formulas matter, FTMO explains that its maximum daily loss calculation includes closed and open position results. Treat each firm’s current rule page as authoritative for that program.

3. Profit target and number of phases

Compare the combined targets across all phases, not only phase one. Also check whether time limits, minimum days or best-day rules change the practical difficulty.

4. Consistency rules

A consistency rule can limit how much of total profit comes from one day or one trade. Model it against your historical results. A strategy with occasional large winners may pass the loss rules but remain ineligible for payout.

5. News trading

Check whether opening, closing or merely holding a position around high-impact news is restricted. Note the event calendar, blackout window and whether the rule changes after funding.

6. Overnight and weekend holding

Swing traders need explicit permission to hold through rollover and weekends. Confirm whether restrictions vary by instrument, account type or evaluation stage.

7. EAs, copy trading and IP rules

Automated systems, trade copiers, shared signals, VPN use and multiple accounts can trigger separate restrictions. Read definitions carefully: “EA allowed” does not necessarily mean every third-party or high-frequency strategy is permitted.

8. Payout eligibility and schedule

Find the first eligible payout date, later payout frequency, minimum amount, approved methods and review process. Check whether requesting a payout changes the drawdown floor or removes accumulated buffer.

9. Profit split

A high advertised split has little value if the eligible balance is restricted or the payout path is unclear. Confirm whether the rate is immediate, performance-based, temporary or tied to a scaling plan.

10. Prohibited-practice clauses

Look for precise definitions of gambling, latency arbitrage, account rolling, hedging across accounts and other prohibited conduct. Broad clauses that can be interpreted only after a payout request create uncertainty.

11. Total cost

Add evaluation fees, activation charges, recurring platform or data costs, reset fees and withdrawal charges. A temporary coupon should reduce a suitable challenge’s cost; it should not make an unsuitable rulebook acceptable.

12. Rule-change policy and legal entity

Record who operates the program, which agreement governs it and whether existing accounts are protected when rules change. Save the rules and payout policy at purchase. A dated copy helps distinguish a genuine breach from a later wording change.

How to compare prop firms with your own trading data

  • Take at least 30 representative trading days from your journal or simulator.
  • Recalculate every day under each firm’s daily and maximum-loss formula.
  • Apply news, holding, lot-size and consistency restrictions to the same trades.
  • Count how often the strategy would breach, delay a pass or postpone a payout.
  • Compare total fees only after eliminating rule sets that do not fit.

ForexCake’s free prop challenge and profit-split calculators can help model targets and the amount you keep. Calculators simplify the arithmetic; the firm’s current agreement still controls the result.

Are prop firms regulated like forex brokers?

Do not assume a retail challenge provider has the same regulatory status or client protections as a licensed forex broker. The business model, account type and jurisdiction matter. Verify the legal entity, the platform or broker involved, and what complaint route exists before paying.

What is the biggest prop-firm red flag?

The most useful warning sign is a material rule that cannot be found in clear public writing before checkout. If support answers differently from the terms, ask for clarification in writing and do not rely on a chat promise that conflicts with the agreement.

The short answer

Choose the firm whose rules your existing strategy can survive repeatedly—not the firm whose promotion makes you want to change your strategy today.
